product description

for string quartet, edited by Klaus Bundies. These 12 four-part fugues for string quartet were written by Felix Mendelssohn at the age of twelve within the framework of his counterpoint studies with composition teacher Carl Friedrich Zelter. Zelter taught his young pupil, as well as his sister Fanny, using methods that were current some fifty years earlier. These fugues thus not only afford insight into Mendelssohn’s well-grounded compositional training, but simultaneously also show where Mendelssohn broke out of the old-fashioned patterns and found his own personal style.
