Smith’s style in the first two collections of harpsichord Suites (appearing in print as Opera I and Opera II) was still being developed, and Handel’s influence, which for decades had strongly influenced music in England, to the adoption of a lighter musical style pointing towards the new galant aesthetic. These compositions do not seem to have had any particular commercial purpose: they are unlikely to have been intended to satisfy the expectations and requirements of amateur musicians. 64 p.
