This original composition was discovered recently in the estate of the Hungarian composer Zoltán Gárdonyi, who was one of the most important students of Paul Hindemith and Zoltán Kodály. The three movement work got its first performance in 1998 - approximately 50 years after the piece was composed - by Markus Hötzel in Dresden. The sonata uses the full possibilities of the sound of the tuba.
